At the time, Senator Obama’s choice of Senator Joe Biden as his vice president during the 2008 election was amusing. It was kind of a self-inflicted handicap. Perhaps Obama likes a challenge and decided that selecting a person who would actually be a useful VP would be sort of bad form against such a weak candidate as Senator McCain. Maybe Obama just needed someone who could make him laugh or someone to send out when things were going badly to say something silly and attract attention. No matter what Obama’s intentions were… it was cute.
However, after the last week, one has to wonder how long Obama will stick with such a blundering liability. The race was shaping up to be a battle of mud-slinging between the two presidential candidates. After Romney’s pick of Ryan, that went out the window. Romney showed the country that he meant business. Of course Biden responded in his classic style, by giving the country a wonderful spectacle of all the reasons he and his boss need to be replaced.
The next piece is the administration’s stunning display of how out of touch it has become with reality. The ever-bipartisan-still-Senator McCain offered some advice to the president, as in “Maybe it’s time to ditch the bumbler and add some heft to the ticket with Hillary”… but why McCain is offering advice to the other party is beside me.
The Administration responded with defiance. “One place I would not go for advice on Vice Presidential running mates is Senator McCain,” said Press Secretary Carney.
I actually disagree with Mr. Carney; McCain might be the best one to seek advice from on how much damage can be caused by a weak VP on a ticket. I also wonder if only I feel this way or did the White House imply that Hillary would be as bad of a choice as Palin? Maybe McCain has a thing for female running mates, but I think the reasons for picking Hillary are a bit more solid than those for Palin.
I also feel that the White House is protesting a bit too much by bringing up Palin. We all agree that Palin hurt the ticket and proved to be less than a stellar intellect. However, some latitude has to be granted to her. It was very much her first time on a stage of any sorts, her unpolished manner showed through a bit too clearly. Many of her mistakes were forced, playing against the best the Democrats could offer, she failed. Biden cannot plead the same protections. He has been in Washington for decades, his mistakes aren’t because the Republicans are after him, he does this stuff all on his own.
Since the last election, I have had many people question how I could vote for someone so stupid as Sarah Palin. I always ask these people to explain how Joe Biden is any better. They normally concede my point.
For four long years we have been subjected to an unending lecture on how stupid Sarah Palin is and all of us for even thinking she might have something to offer. Now is the time to shine the flashlight on those who have spent the last four years hurling stones. They might be surprised that when the light is focused on their glass house, they are more exposed than they think.
Paul Ryan dissected the fraud of Obamacare in six minutes, he will have Joe Biden for ninety
