No Guns For You

We all saw the famous photo of Mark and Patricia McCloskey standing in front of their house brandishing weapons as a group of protesters marched down the street two weeks ago.
My initial thought was that Patricia needs to get a bigger gun and learn how to hold it. The odds of her hitting anything other than the blue sky are lower than the Covid death rate.
Technique aside, it was an unflattering photo, two older upper class white people waving guns at a bunch of protesters isn’t a sympathetic look and the internet was quick to jump all over them as reactionary racists.

However, snapshots of the situations that are quickly uploaded to Twitter aren’t very reliable as we have seen so many times, even if they strike an emotional cord. I don’t live in the St. Louis area, but I was able to track down the location using Google and I have a couple of pictures to share.

The first one is from the several news sites which shows the gate which was broken down in order for the protesters to enter the neighborhood.st louis 3

Next we have the Google Street view of that gate.  You can clearly see that gated aspect of the community as well as the McCloskey house visible behind the fence.

Finally we have the Google satellite view of the McCloskey home. The cobblestone front entrance is obviously where the confrontation took place based on the original photos of the event.

Looking at these overhead views we see that there is literally zero protection between the McCloskey’s front door and the group of protesters who had breached the private and gated neighborhood. The McCloskeys claim that the protesters were within 30 to 40 feet of their home and judging from the satellite view that’s very believable. This mob marched in front of their home while threatening physical harm and the torching or forced appropriation of their home.

So ask yourselves, if a group of several hundred people broke into your gated community and began threatening you and your spouse while flaunting various types of weapons, would you not arm yourself and protect yourself and property?

According to local prosecutor Kimberly Gardner the answer is no.

I am alarmed at the events that occurred over the weekend, where peaceful protesters were met by guns and a violent assault,” Gardner said. “We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated.

Gardner lived up to her words when the police raided the McCloskey home on Friday and seized the rifle that Mr. McCloskey was pictured holding during the confrontation. Even though no warrants have been issued or charges filed, this man has been disarmed in violation of the second amendment because he dared to hold it while standing on his own property as criminal trespassers marched in front of his home. That is not the behavior of a free society, that is not adhering to the Constitution, that is paving the way for mob rule and anarchy.
