Dowd and her Pot problem.

I just read Maureen Dowd’s article about Mitt Romney and the neo-Neanderthals that support him. In the article she quotes Bob Dole’s critique that the GOP must broaden its base to ensure that it is more than a one issue party. Dowd seems to be implying that social conservatism is that one issue. She mainly worries about abortion in her commentary.

I feel like I have to point out that it is the liberal left that is driving the abortion debate. Their insistence on continuing to bring up the issue shows that they really only have one issue that they can gain traction with. I can’t deny that it is an effective election strategy, to keep everyone talking about “Reproductive rights” instead of every single other issue that this administration has failed at.
Try as the Left might, this election is about the economy, not abortion or gay marriage or any of the other annoyingly phony issues they try to debate.
Dowd may point to people like Santorum as evidence that the GOP is a one issue party. But I must remind her that Romney is the nominee, not Rick Santorum. The voters have proven several times now, that social conservatism is not what is driving the party. It is the reckless fiscal policies of the Federal Government. It seems to be that Dowd’s line of attack is sorta a “pot calling the kettle black” kind of defense. If there is any group trying to get by with only one issue in their favor, it’s the Liberal Left.
