Even before Sandy delivered itself upon our shores, the left wing press was laying into Mitt Romney with the fury of a Category 4 temper tantrum. According to them, he would leave the victims of the storm to fend for themselves. (The Left doesn’t consider this a big deal when the victims are Ambassadors and CIA agents dealing with mortar shells instead of rain.) To back up their charges they point to a debate last year where Mitt Romney said that agencies such as FEMA should turn more of their responsibilities over to the states.
Most of the discussion has been in response to a Op-ed by the NY Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/30/opinion/a-big-storm-requires-big-government.html
It argues that disaster response is a principal responsibility of the Federal Government and Mitt Romney’s plan of shrinking the government will mean that more people will be left helpless in the wake of natural disasters. What the Left routinely ignores is that Romney and Ryan are not proposing the elimination of the Federal government, but to refocus it on it’s primary duties and dividing those duties between the Federal and State governments… as the founders intended our country to be managed. Romney’s belief that state’s should exercise more control over their affairs and be given a freer hand in dealing with a whole range of issues, directly conflicts with the Left’s belief that Washington should have the final say on everything.
Under the Left’s agenda of complete control from Washington, they have taken the Federal Government’s general duties and expanded them to cover issues such as Abortion, Contraceptives, Education, School Lunches, Health Insurance, Speed Limits, minimum wage laws, proper workplace attire, weapon trafficking in Mexico, YouTube videos, and steroid use in Major League Baseball. The heavy hand of the Federal Government has invaded nearly every aspect of our daily lives, all with the intention of helping us.
By extending the reach of the government as far as the Left has, it weakens it’s ability to deal with the problems that it was designed to deal with, like hurricanes and other natural disasters. With the government busy spending money on trying to prop up the failing Solar Power industry, there isn’t as much left over to cover for events like Sandy.
That doesn’t bother the Editorial Board of the New York Times, after all they ask the question if
“financially strapped states would do a better job than a properly functioning federal agency?”
As if the Federal Government isn’t also “financially strapped”.
If we continue to rely on the Feds to solve all the problems we encounter each day, we ensure that we will push the government to its breaking point, where the government collapses or defaults to tyranny as so many other governments have done. In order to solve the problems facing the nation, they must be divided between the organizations that are in place to deal with them. State and Local governments exist for a reason, and more power must be returned to them and by extension, to the people.
Mitt Romney’s company, Bain Capital, specialized in taking failing enterprises and turning them around. They did this by cutting off unworkable pieces and turning them over to groups or companies that were better suited to manage them. Our Federal Government serves a very important role in our lives, but there are some things that it is not suited to handle. Those must be taken from its control and given back to those who are better qualified to deal with them.
Maybe the guy who did that for a career would be a good choice for President.
