Scholarships, Tax Breaks and Unions.

Governor Sandoval has a challenged the State Legislature to make progress on reforming the Nevada School system. Because the Nevada Constitution currently prohibits the use of a voucher system to advance the cause of school choice, more ingenuity must be used to give our children a better shot at a quality education.
One current proposal (Senate Bill 445 Nevada Education Choice Scholarship Program) will give tax breaks to companies that donate to private schools. The tax break will be equal to the amount that is donated, not to exceed $5 million per year. The scholarships will be targeted towards children that come from poorer households, providing them with a fighting chance to escape the failing public school system and get a better education.

While tax breaks are always a risky affair, this method of providing funding straight from the taxpayer to a scholarship would be effective. Allowing the money to bypass red tape, greedy politicians and inept administrators will result in the most effective use of the dollars.
Of course, the Teachers Unions are lining up against the bill. We have no doubts where their priorities lay, as it clearly states on their website, they only throw their support behind “pro-public school” measures and candidates.
So far, trusting only public schools has stranded Nevada at the bottom of the ranks across the country. It’s time to make changes. Be bold and give our children a chance to go to better schools.
