Sunday TV is normally some of the most boring broadcasting of the week, and this Sunday it was even worse as half the stations debated the Zimmerman verdict to eternity. With the amount of airtime devoted to the outcome you would think that it had been a surprise ending. Instead, it ended as most rational people knew it would: with a not guilty verdict.
The reason this was the expected outcome for many is because of how the law works. It does not take into account racism, public perception or emotions; it is a fact driven reason machine. The facts of the case have been public knowledge for some time and at no time during the trial did the prosecution bring forward any new information or earth shattering evidence. What we knew prior the trial is what we know now, only two people know the whole story and one of them is dead. Without Martin alive to tell his side of the story, we have only Zimmerman’s side and the statements of a few people who witnessed bits and pieces of the incident.
While it might be true that Zimmerman lied about what happened to provide justification for his actions, it falls to the State to prove that he is lying and committed a crime. Zimmerman’s actions prior firing the shot were ill-advised and possibly reckless, but he did not commit any crime during that time. Zimmerman may have created a dangerous situation, but it did not become violent until Martin chose to engage Zimmerman physically.
Despite the fact that the prosecution failed to make a convincing argument for conviction, the black community leaders and their Left wing supporters have been filling the airwaves of MSNBC with wails of grief over the verdict and crying out for a “National Conversation” on racism. They have spent the past year demanding justice for Martin, which meant having Zimmerman arrested and put on trial for murder. This happened and it still isn’t good enough for them, because what they were really looking for was a lynch mob, not reasoned due process. A murder case could not be made against Zimmerman, that’s why the police didn’t arrest him at the scene, why the DA didn’t file charges until after the media attention got too heavy to bear. The system worked from the start. It did not take into account feelings or emotions and focused solely on the facts; of course the Left doesn’t appreciate facts that don’t jive with its agenda.
Since the verdict, the Left has decided to start demanding that the Justice Department to open a civil rights case based on the belief that Zimmerman killed Martin because he was black… while this tactic neatly avoids the barrier of double jeopardy, it clearly violates the principle of it. But principles aren’t going to slow down the Left’s pursuit of its agenda. The Left insists that race was the driving factor in the shooting, even though the FBI has already conducted an investigation into the issue and found that Zimmerman became suspicious of Martin due to circumstances and his clothing.
Even with all the evidence to the contrary, the Left will continue to make the argument that Martin was shot down in the street while committing no crime because he was black. What the evidence does point to is that Zimmerman noticed Martin fit the description of criminals in the area and followed him. When Martin noticed he was being followed he reacted like a thug and attacked Zimmerman. The Left is purposely creating a false narrative and in doing so creating a wider divide between the races and cultures of our nation.
Instead of condemning Martin’s thug like behavior and persona that led to his death, they blame racism. If Martin had been carrying a book bag and wearing a collared shirt Zimmerman wouldn’t have looked twice at him, regardless of color. It is the thug life culture that is to blame for Martin’s death and that is what we should be having a “National Conversation” about.
