If you have been watching the news recently you have probably heard about the radical measures that the extremist Tea Party is planning on taking to block Obamacare. Republicans have opposed Obamacare since day one- the legislation did not receive a single Republican vote and after Scott Brown won the senate seat from Massachusetts Reid and Pelosi had to resort to legislative tricks to get the bill passed. The media casts those who oppose Obamacare as radicals, but the ranks of “Extremists” are growing, and they are coming from unlikely sources.
First came President Obama’s delay of the Employers Mandate. The supporters of the bill argue that the delay is due to paperwork problems and technical issues and shouldn’t reflect badly on the bill. I agree with them in part, this bill is facing huge technical obstacles, but it does reflect badly. The stack of insurmountable obstacles the program faces is one of the many reasons that Republicans oppose it- taking command of the entire Health Care sector from some Washington offices is a staggering undertaking. While the GOP objections to the bill rest on many foundations, the belief that it is impossible for the government to administer such a program is one of the most important. This highlights a common fault line between the two political parties: the disagreement on what the government is capable of doing. Conservatives do not argue for a smaller government because they like the sound of it, but because a larger government is so ineffective it becomes dangerous. Benghazi, Snowden and the IRS scandal are only the most recent examples. Obama’s Administration is admitting that it cannot meet the requirements of the bill and needs more time, but refuses to acknowledge that it proves people like Ted Cruz are correct in saying the bill is unworkable.
Another surprise detractor of Obamacare is the archconservative labor union group. This last week the Nevada AFL-CIO passed a resolution condemning the Administration for misleading the public over the effects of Obamacare and expressed their worry that this bill would destroy their current health care coverage. The AFL-CIO joins a growing list of unions that are displeased with Obamacare. Last month, a group including UNITE Here (which is the parent of the largest Nevada union Culinary Local 226) sent a letter to the President charging his bill will “destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.”
It is a testament to how horrible Obamacare is that Republicans and labor unions are in agreement on legislation.
Unfortunately for us, none of the arguments against Obamacare seem to be making a dent in support from the diehards. Speaking at a college, Obama charged the House Republicans who are rallying against Obamacare with failing to offer an economic plan. It could be argued that trying to repeal a health care bill that is threatening to “destroy the 40 hour work week” is a fairly solid economic plan.
The sad reality is that Obamacare represents the brass knuckle policies of the Democrats. As much as they claim to represent the middle class, they are currently ignoring the middle class’s worries over Obamacare in their hurry to rally the support of the poor. Here in Nevada, Steven Horsford is a clear example of these tactics, even after attending the convention at which the AFL-CIO passed their resolution mentioned above, he is holding events next month to sell Obamacare to the poorer elements of his district. The goal is to get as many people hooked on Obamacare as quickly as possible so that it will become untouchable in future elections and face backlash from those who have swallowed the bait. It is another vote buying scheme financed by the middle class. That is why instead of responding to the union concerns, Harry Reid said they were “exaggerating” and trying to “scare people”. But what Reid said a few weeks ago is the most disturbing. Speaking here in Las Vegas, he admitted that Obamacare is not the end goal, rather, it is merely a stepping stone to a single payer system. The Obamacare supporters do not care about the weakness or failures of their program, because they are counting on it to drive up costs and leave citizens with no option but to turn to the government for health care. Obamacare’s failure will usher in the single payer system and truly bring every American’s health care under the direct control of Washington.
Hopefully, Americans, like the labor unions, will continue to wake up and realize that this bill is not intended to help the middle class, but to destroy it and finally bring them under the umbrella of the Federal Government’s “protection.”
