I would say if you haven’t heard about what is happening at the Bundy Ranch by now, you must be living under a rock….but in order to find a rock of that size, you are probably on land run by the BLM, so you have heard their cow herding helicopters by now.
Considering the ruckus created by Clive’s colorful commentary on race relations, something should be said about it. I agree with the premise he seemed to trying to get across, that today black communities are practically enslaved by Left. As long as they organize and vote for Democrats, they supply them with food and housing. This is a true problem that no-one wants to mention or deal with. Anyone that brings up this type of point is quickly written off as a slaver and racist. Regardless of what Left says I believe I disagree with Clive that anyone would be better off in actual slavery. Freedom is the solution to our problems, both racial and of Grazing rights.
While I disagree with many of the militia members who have gather out there who believe the time has come for a shooting war with Feds, they are not incorrect in the idea that things need to change. We have let the federal government grow unchecked for decades and it needs to be beaten back, though I believe this still can be done via peaceful means.
However, for every person that has sided with the Bundys against the Feds, there is a Lefty who is supporting the Government. The most common argument they put forward is one that no one is disagreeing with….
The Bundys have lost in court and have been found to be breaking the law.
As I said, no one is disagreeing that they have lost in court repeatedly, but the question is whether or not the law is just and correct? If we are deciding all problems purely on what a court has decided, then I don’t want to hear them complain about “Citizens United” or drone strikes ever again. Surely the Left doesn’t need to be reminded that the courts and laws upheld slavery, Prohibition, Jim Crow laws and so many other disagreeable positions in the past. Laws can be changed when the people decide that they need to be different. That is the beauty of our country.
The second line of attack is that Bundy is a moocher living off of the Government.
It strikes me as rather ironic that the Left fights so hard to protect Food Stamps and Welfare, which give people food, but have no desire to assist those who produce the food. The Left has unabashedly taken the position of being inconsistent while smearing the Right for the same thing.
So how do we address this supposed inconsistent position of being against entitlements but supporting the Bundys grazing for free?
First of all there is the work requirement. The Bundys are doing all of the work and taking all of the risk in operating their ranch. They are not asking for a government handout that causes us to go into debt or take from another to give to them. The land is there and isn’t going anywhere. Not having cattle there doesn’t benefit anyone.
I live about ninety minutes from the Bundy ranch and I can assure you that the final sixty minutes of the drive takes you through nothing but wilderness. It is the type of place where you have to carefully plan your fuel consumption so you don’t run out of gas in the middle of a desert.
The Bundys are not taking consumable goods from the government nor truly bothering anyone else with their ranch. (By this time we all know the tortoise cover story to be nothing but just that.)
The question must be asked, if the land in question is truly public land, then shouldn’t it be put to the best use possible? Surely, grazing cattle on it is more desirable to forcing it to be completely unused for the sake of a tortoise. So if it is public space and should be put to the best use possible, shouldn’t it be allowed for practically free? It isn’t costing the government anything to have that land, surprisingly the land has existed and shall always exist, no upkeep necessary. It is true that the federal government paid Mexico for the land, but the entire American Southwest cost us less than twenty million dollars a hundred and sixty years ago. I feel safe in saying the Feds have been reimbursed for their investment and then some.
If the Feds insist on keeping control of the land, they should not charge any more than it costs them to maintain the land, which I imagine is practically zero. If the cattle do cause problems, then it should be on Bundy to pay the damages or take preventive measures, such as a fence along the highway.
I do believe that the land should be turned over to the Nevada state government so that the use of the land can be decided by those who have the most vested interest in local affairs. The idea that public property must be tightly managed by the Feds is opposite to the country our Founders envisioned and created. Public lands should be open to any ventures. If I want to have picnic or graze cattle I should be allowed. After all, it’s my land as well. Having said that, I give Clive Bundy permission to graze his cattle on my portion of our public lands.
