Responding to a question from Major Garrett about Malaysia’s record on human rights, President Obama said that they have work to do, just as the United States does.
I normally don’t agree with the President on matters like this, however he does have a point. Malaysia’s Government recently imprisoned an opposition leader by the name of Anwar Ibrahim under their countries “sodomy law”, they also suffer from widespread abuse by their police forces. Obama hasn’t managed to throw any of the opposition leaders in jail yet, but not for lack of trying. The recent prosecution of Dinesh D’Souza and IRS targeting of Conservative groups and heavy handed tactics of the BLM and Justice Department are definitely closer to the Malaysian model than we should be.
Obama is right that we need to do a better job on protecting human rights in America, maybe he can lead by example.
