Politico has this story on their site today….apparently Obama is an enlightened leader, but we are just to stupid to realize it. The author uses JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example of being a wise and enlightened leader, instead of a brash one. He is right about the historical record of Kennedy making a deal with the Soviets by agreeing not to try and overthrow Castro and removing missiles from Turkey. However he completely omits the fact that Kennedy was willing to fight the Soviets and had sent US planes and ships into direct confrontation with them. Kennedy negotiated from a position of power, he didn’t draw lines in the sand that he couldn’t backup and he didn’t attempt to use hashtags and leverage.
You can only rely on the power of diplomacy if the other party is afraid of what might happen if agreement breaks down. The Soviets knew that Kennedy wouldn’t be pushed around, do you really think Putin feels the same way about Obama?
