Fleeing War, a European Pastime.

The ever present boogeyman of World War II has been creeping up in the news recently. This time the image of the war is superimposed on the ongoing refugee crisis that is spreading throughout Europe, due to the ongoing civil war in Syria. The fear was realized just the other day when workers in the Czech Republic began writing numbers on the hands of refugees in their camps for easier identification.
For people that view the world in soundbites and popular perceptions it is an easy jump to make the connection to the Nazis and concentration camps, but that is a juvenile way of viewing our existence. Only in a world disconnected from reality would we equate refugee aid workers to Gestapo executioners. Also, being perfectly honest, there have been a lot of charges leveled at the Nazi’s, but I’ve never heard of inefficiency as being one of them. By ignoring the outcome and goals, the modern western liberal has managed to make confusing perception with reality normal practice which is a chronic problem and is not only confined to the current crisis.

However, since we are talking about World War II, let’s continue down that path…
How exactly did the Europeans resolve the problem of Nazi aggression? Goodwill? Easy immigration policies and a welcoming welfare state? A weighted formula to spread the Nazi influence out across Europe with the more affluent counties carrying a heavier burden?
Unfortunately for them, they did try the path of non-resistance and soon found resistance to be futile. However, despite the severe consequences for failing to deal with the Nazi issue, as soon as they were saved by some mysterious armed forces from across the sea, they returned to their happy-go-lucky state of behavior. This is the world that they currently reside in, as once again they have chosen to make themselves the helpless victims of the world. This is evidenced by the fact that after about five years of civil war in Syria, the only problem they can even think about dealing with is refugees. In all the words that have been spilled recently about this crisis, I have not seen a single sentence that gives thought to how to actually end the war.
The failure of the Western world is not that it is not sufficiently welcoming of refugees, but that we will make no effort to end the causes of their suffering in the first place.
Chairman Mao once said that power grows out of the barrel of a gun and he was absolutely right, but it is up to the holder of the gun to decide how to use that power. The Western Liberals, who are afraid of their own shadows, (imagine their fright if they actually saw a gun) have fooled themselves and their countries into believing that power stems from charity and a nuanced understanding of nonintervention. The idea that peace can be achieved without strength is a mirage; you only need to refer to those who climbed out of their holes, crawled out of the cupboards and staggered out of the camps in 1945 to see the truth. Was it the Liberal’s kind words and thoughtful understanding that pushed back the forces of oppression or was it the power that flowed from our muzzles?
