Ilhan Omar once again ruffled feathers on Tuesday when at the end of a roughly five minute speech she closed with this statement..
As long as our economy and political systems prioritize profit without considering who is profiting, who is being shut out, we will perpetuate this inequality. So we cannot stop at criminal justice system. We must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression, wherever we find it.
The Washington Post was quick to jump to her defense, accusing conservatives of misconstruing her statement. In their opinion, she isn’t claiming wanting to dismantle the entire country, just the parts that are oppressive. Of course, earlier in her speech, as the WaPo notes, she mentioned a few of the problem areas, such as Criminal Justice, Housing, Education, Employment, Health Care and the Environment. That is a relief, because the law, our homes, our education, our jobs, our health and the environment make up such a small part of our daily lives. I’m glad Representative Omar is only accusing about 95% of our system as being oppressive. That’s quite a compromise.
Sarcasm aside, Ilhan Omar and her Marxist crowd represent a major disturbance in our political system. For nearly our entire existence, our political system has functioned around the three sides: Right, Center and Left. These positions have framed nearly every debate since Washington took office. Even as recently as President Obama, this system held. Obama surely represented a shift of the Left wing to the farther reaches of the Left, but Obama remained tied to the center of the political order. The new wave of Democrats are moving their agenda from the idea that the center should be shifted to the left, to the idea that the whole system should be smashed. They have deployed scorched earth tactics to shore up their positions and labels anyone who questions this new adventure into radicalism as a reactionary racist.
This is the true problem with our current situation that is being ignored. The New Left fundamentally views the USA as the oppressor in all situations. In their view every good action or deed that has ever been done by this country cannot overcome our core failures. This concept has sprouted very recently like some kind of Inception-like mind trick on those whose formative years were shaped by Tumbler, Twitter and Facebook.
Though it is not an entirely new concept, blaming Capitalistic systems for all of the wrong in the world is at its core, Marxism. That is an ideology that still actively persecutes people in places like North Korea, Hong Kong and Havana despite having mostly been driven from the civilized world by the United States.
More troubling is how quickly the DNC has rushed to embrace this new concept of history as they try to secure power.
It would be hard to accuse Obama of holding that viewpoint. He toyed with the line but stayed on the traditional side. Scrolling back through Democrat leaders like John Kerry, Al Gore, Bill Clinton… it’s impossible to believe that any of these men or the people they surrounded themselves with viewed the country as anything but a force for good in the world. Yet now the the fashionable idea that has taken hold of the DNC is that we have only brought suffering to the world.
Most of the focus has been on the ending piece of Omar’s statement, but I think the beginning is the more telling. It is the fundamental truth underlying New Left’s agenda,
As long as our economy and political systems prioritize profit without considering who is profiting, who is being shut out, we will perpetuate this inequality. So we cannot stop at criminal justice system. We must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression, wherever we find it.
Profit is the true villain to Omar and Marx alike. Specifically, the fact that profit is gained by people regardless of their means or needs. In their version of the world, fairness would determine where the profits would fall and who should make the judgement on fairness? The Soviets, of course, or the worker councils or the community activists. As long as someone like them gets to be in charge, surely things will be better. It will give all those college loan debtors with art history degrees something to do.
The New Left is eager to point out all of the problems they find with our country, but in reality, they are all smoke screens and diversions to obscure their true aims, which is their century long assault on Capitalism.
